Review: The Bourne Identity (2002)

Posted on

Another day, another movie franchise to watch for the first time, right? This week I delve into Matt Damon’s quest to find himself in The Bourne Identity.

Much like this man who finds himself pulled aboard a boat with bullet wounds in his back, we are dropped right into the movie without any knowledge to what has previously happened. The strange man eventually finds several of his “passports” taking the name Jason Bourne from one of them. Jason soon finds out that his skills are particularly impressive, getting out of several impossible jams and putting a few in the hospital. Normal citizen, Marie (Franka Potente) finds herself wrapped up in the adventure as well when she decides to give Bourne a ride to Paris for a few thousand dollars. Will Bourne find out who he is and what he’s doing?

What can I say? Matt Damon can kick some butt. The action is top notch, you should watch just for that. But the shroud of mystery surrounding the circumstances is what had me hooked. I have no clue what the next 2 (or three if you include Jeremy Renner) movies hold, but count me in. Another surprise was the female sidekick played by Franka Potente. She played the role with realism, although I could probably guess that she’ll learn some moves by the beginning of The Bourne Supremacy. Surprises, action, and mystery had me hooked for every minute. Just mad it took me this long to find out.

My Rating: B+
