Review: It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010)

Posted on

Watch the trailer below, and there is no doubt is seems like a sort of a One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest for tweens. But it doesn’t really get that far down the craziness scale. But don’t let this teen love story with a dude famous for being hungover slide past without noticing.

The plot is simple enough. A young teenager, dealing with the normal trappings of young-adulthood, becomes depressed and checks himself into a mental hospital. Here he reflects on his problems, stresses, and general life, and deals with some things that we all probably have gone through at some time in our lives. Oh yeah, and he meets a girl. Oh, and Zach Galifanakis is in it too.

While It’s Kind of a Funny Story is a good movie, it has too many issues with it to become a great one. For one, it’s kind of predictable with the Cuckoo’s Nest and It’s a Wonderful Life motifs going on throughout. Another is that absolutely out of place musical number. Really? Who thought of it. But it also had some great things you didn’t see coming. Like Galifanakis’ gentler side, and a comedic bit that you won’t see coming. All in all good, but I’m not crazy about it. (See what I did there?
