Review: 500 Days of Summer (2009)

I’m not the biggest fan of romances or what some people try to pass off as “romantic comedies”. BUT: I am a huge fan of not only Zooey Deschanel but also co-star Joseph Gordon Levitt. Another one of my movie weaknesses? A great soundtrack. So you might see where I’m heading here.

500 days is chronicled showing the various key moments in the relationship of Tom (Gordon Levitt) and Summer (Deschanel). Tom is the hopeless romantic, Summer, the “relationships are a disease” type. The non-linear story follows the heartbreaks of Tom as he attempts to completely win over “the one”

There was so much I enjoyed about 500 Days that perhaps no one else would enjoy. For example; there were hints at movie history, such as the chess scene in The Seventh Seal, or the continuation of a Simon and Garfunkel song after seeing a clip of The Graduate. Of course, the overall mood of the film seems to be one very long music video (Director Marc Webb directed numerous music videos), which is one of my favorite things about it. It isn’t predictable, you can side with both of the characters, and it has really happy moments, and gut wrenching ones.

My Rating: A
