Summer Movie 2011 Flop Chances

Posted on

X-Men: First Class

In Theaters: Now

Chance of Flopping: 10%

The X-Men franchise is pretty solid. When 3 movies, plus one devoted to a single character are made, it’s pretty safe to say they are well like. 10% chance of flopping just for how goofy that helmet looks.

Super 8

In Theaters: June 10

Chance of Flopping: 2%

What does this movie have going for it? J.J. Abrams. Steven Spielberg. Everything else is just normal. Hopefully Super 8 brings us back to the great summer movies of the past like Jaws. I can’t explain how excited I am for this movie.

Green Lantern

In Theaters: June 17

Chance of Flopping: 85%

Sounds like a great idea, but I’m still not sold. Somehow, I think the whole movie will turn out cheesy, and not in a good way (think Green Hornet).

Cars 2

In Theaters: June 17

Chance of Flopping: 20%

If any other animation studio gave the plot to Cars 2 (Cars as secret agents), I would give them 100% chance of flopping. However, this is Pixar. And even though I have my doubts (my first for a Pixar movie), I still think they will be able to pull off their magic.

Mr. Poppers Penguins

In Theaters: June 17

Chance of Flopping: 40%

Reason for it to be a hit: Jim Carrey. Reason for it to be a flop: Rhymes with Bim Darrey. In reality, it is really a 50/50 chance of it being a hit or miss, but the trailer amused me, so 40%.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

In Theaters: July 1

Chance of Flopping: 45%

The first Transformers was incredible, and the second one fell off by alot. So here comes the third one: minus Megan Fox, but with another great model, but horrible actress. So what predecessor with the third be like? My guess is the first. If you’ve seen the trailer, you know Michael Bay has added even more explosions in destroying the city of Chicago. It may not be deep, but it sure will be entertaining as the first one.

In Theaters: July 8

Chance of Flopping: 60%

Should be higher, but what can I say? I loved Mall Cop. And hoping to mimic the mimicry of the second Hangover in different location, we get to see Kevin James in a different pathetic vocation.

Captain America: The First Avenger

In Theaters: July 22

Chance of Flopping: 50%

The trailer had me pumped, until the suit and shield hit the screen. I just don’t know if Captain America will be as awesome on screen as his other superhero brethren.

Cowboys & Aliens

In Theaters: July 29

Chance of Flopping: 20%

The plot is explained in the title. Yes, it is ridiculous, but isn’t that what movies are for? To take us into another world. This movie just looks like plain fun, from the cast (Ford! Wilde! Craig!) to the action, to the plot.

The Smurfs

In Theaters: July 29

Chance of Flopping: 100%

Do you really need proof to why this is 100%? Watch the trailer if you really want to put yourself through that mess.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

In Theaters: August 5

Chance of Flopping: 50%

James Franco is trying to make a monkey revolution into a legitimate Hollywood plot. My appreciation isn’t hidden (ie: Howl), and I hope for my sake, this isn’t bad, but who can really tell until it comes out?
